Hello Everyone,
Just signed up to this board looking for wrenching help. In case you are wondering about the screen name. Iīm an engineer by trade. I design and work on instrumentation and control systems for nuclear power plants.
I bought my wife a used 2000 Xterra 4WD after our daughter was born. Her Escort was too small for a baby in the back seat; you couldnīt sit in the driverīs side with the car seat. Plus, the xterra has so much more metal and mass behind it, figured it would be safer than the Escort.
Got it for $500 from a co-worker. It had a blown engine and he didnīt want to deal with uncertainty of a junk-yard engine. Iīve got enough time turning wrenches that it didnīt bother me, plus the 4WD was nice for eventual trips to the beach. Got a used engine with around 50K miles on it for $1100, and paid another grand for the install. New clutch was put in at the same time.
Two weeks after, one of the fuel injectors went. I did the replacement myself. There is a hose near the firewall that was a particular joy to reach. Then the TPS went nuts, but that turned out to be a pin I had bent when I disassembled the intake.
Itīs been smooth sailing since then. Up until last week that is, now its the tranny. Iĺl ask about that in the appropriate forum, though.
Cheers.
