I'm looking for pic of X's with 18's on them. Does anyone have any?

I'm looking at putting on the Silent Armors on a nice 18" rim for mostly road use.

Frankly, they look at lot like rims that are a little larger than you have...so less sidewall rubber, more metal.

:D

Go to www.tirerack.com ----> wheels

Select your X, and the size wheels you want, and then which rim...and click to see it on the X....that's where the above pic was from.

It lets you see how the rim would look on your rig.

try this website- not all the rims will fit, so be wary of that, but it will at least allow you to load your color and gen x, add lift if you want it, change tire size, and put the rims on it so you can see what it looks like. i used it a lot when i was trying to decide on a wheel/tire combo for my rig. i wound up going with 17's and 33's

Ok, I'm a complete car newb here. I havn't done much more than watch somebody put a radio in my cars.

I've looked around at simialr sites and seen 20's and even 22's, can you really throw those on w/o a lift?

Is the tire radius or diameter larger on an 18 then a 16? 20's and 22's? Obviously the wheel is larger but does that mean there is just less tire and more wheel or more of both?

edit: thanks for the website!

LOL

OK - The metal part in the middle is the rim or wheel...and, it can be any diameter really....and the tires have a hole in the middle that's meant to fit onto the metal thing...

...the hole in the tire has be be meant for that sized rim...or the tire won't go on, or, it will fall off or not hold air, etc.

So...the rim sizes are in inches, and refer to the diameter of the rim...specifically, to the diameter of the rim that matches tires with a hole in the middle of that size...

So a 18" rim is meant for tires with an 18" hole in the middle.

Tire sizes can be in inches too, but, they are labeled in terms of THEIR diameter, like how TALL they are...and, they are labeled in terms of the diameter of that HOLE in their middle.

So, a tire might be labeled as a 33 x 12.5/18

That means its 33" tall, has a sidewall thickness (How fat it is) of 12.5", and a hole in the middle for an 18" rim.

:D

So - the rim size can be anything really, but on X's, typically 15" - 22"

The tires can also be anything, but typically on X's 29" - 35"

So, the outside diameter of the tire can be anywhere in that range, and as long as the tire has the right sized hole in its middle, you can use any sized rim you want to to mount the tire on the truck.

:D

So - the tire can be the same sized overall diameter, and the hole in the middle is larger for bigger rims, and smaller for smaller rims.

For off roading, grip on uneven surfaces, and a softer ride/less rim damage...you want a taller sidewall (More rubber between the rim and the road)

For autocrossing/handling, you want a lower sidewall (The rim is closer to the road/there's less play between the rim and the road, etc...)

For the same sized tire, the smaller the rim, the more sidewall height you'll have.

A larger rim = less sidewall height.

:D

OK - does that help?

:wink-big:

Ha! Who'd have known! Ok anybody but me apparently :p

I got it, I just don't want to choose, say a 22" wheel and then realize, oh, I need a lift kit or something. This answers my question. Thanks much TJ.

You are welcome.

BTW - Do you plan on using the truck for off roading possibly, or are you going to be a mall crawler?

:D

(We can make tire recommendations if we know what you'd like the truck to be able to do)

Mall Crawler, nice. I must admit, the thought of off roading is tempting but I am a mall crawler 95% of the time. The other 5% is spent in snow. I don't think I want 20's, 18's are plenty big for me. though I'd like to see some members rides and what size wheels they have. I just want something that looks nice and bada$$ at the same time :)

Take a look around the member ride section and you'll have a good idea of what people run.

I say go with a smaller wheel size if your going off roading (to prevent damage to the wheel). If you're planning on staying on the pavement, 18's will look great, IMO. But ultimately, it's your choice...do what makes you happy ;)

Well, snow requires some tread depth and contact patch conformance...so a really short sidewall will make your rig like a sled.

:D

I don't know if you've looked btw...but TIRES for the 18" rims are very expensive compared to 15" - 17" tires (I'm guessing no, as you just found out that tires had different sized holes in the middle, etc...)

So - before picking a RIM size...look at the TIRES for that size.

Assuming you plan on staying essentially stock, you can typically fit tires up to ~ 33" in diameter, and up to about 11.5 - 12" wide.

11.5" - 12" is the same as 285 - 305 mm, so when looking at tire sizes, those are your bogies.

:D

Tires wear out, and you need to buy new ones over and over again...so, you don't want to be stuck with bald tires and no $ for replacements, etc.

one thing tj forgot to mention: Rims larger than 17" BRING THE SUCK lol. Sorry its personal prefence really but in my honest opinion large rims on anything just look bad be prepared for the ride gettin worse with the larger wheel.

I got a used set of 20x8.5" American Racing wheels with 265/50-20 Toyo Proxes tires.

I love the way they look, but the handling is a trade-off. On-road cornering is way better, but straight line tracking is not quite as good - bumps and other irregularities in the pavement tend to affect the steering.

Compared to stock, these tires are better in snow and worse in rain. They are fine on gravel/dirt roads, but I would not want to venture onto logging roads or other more challenging surfaces.

that looks pretty bad ass actually....there's a lot more rubber on there than i thought would be for a 20 inch rim. the black wheels look great with the color of your x as well

I'm looking at 16's or 18's with some new tires...

I'm thinking about getting these in 16's so I can use my stock tires...I just got a Black 2009 X...

If I decide to go with 18's I would get these...

I also im looking to get some 18s possibly. I've seen Xterras with 22s. They look cool but they ride so hard. And they got little bitty tires that are expensive!
