Xterra Mike
04-28-2009, 04:48 PM
i was going to say either the campsite or the ranger station. The ranger station would probably be better since i don't know what the camp site even looks like or where there would be parking. Atsion Ranger station is at Atsion Rd and RT 206. The campsite is here:

they sell them for around $30 at walmart (simple to wire). and get a magnetic roof mount antenna from walmart also cheap at $9. when/if you get it-wire it up, check that it turns on, and leave it till we meet up. it needs to be tuned with an swr meter (i have one). take 5 minutes. i will bring it if you are planning on getting one (highly recommend it). please cool your jets guys.....all here for a good time.

Xterra Mike

Yea if you buy one and bring it down we'll have you wired up in no time. You could look on Craigslist for a handheld too. i've seen them real cheap. That will get you by for the weekend.

or if you find yourself on route 80 or 78 or something you could stop at a truck stop...usually they sell radios, antennas, wiring, etc. for really cheap...especially the TA ( travel america) rest stops...bought a 3ft whip kit w/ 12ft coax + mount bracket for $10

OK, so running total:

TJTJ

There's HUNDREDS OF MILES OF FREE TRAILS.

Its pretty much dirt roads, sand, and bogs...and you are typically traversing ALL of them in a day of wheeling.

Depending upon WHERE you are in the enormous area, you might have more of one than the other, etc.

There's essentially no rocks...there are some abandoned old structures, like the forge, etc...which are MADE OF rocks, etc....but, that's pretty much it....mud bogging (Find "The Quarter Mile" for example, that's a popular run), is the most demanding part if you do not by pass the mud holes.

The sugar sand can be challenging if not used to it...as its very soft, fine sand that bogs you down easily.

I'll have my grill that goes over the campfire for dogs and burgers. Its nice and big. i'll bring some food too.

is there alota wheelin there

Definately

I was thinking the Atsion campground. Its right around the corner from the ranger station. I'm sure there will be no problem getting a campsite. I'll be down there on friday so i'll scope it out. For those who are coming Friday night we should exchange Cell #'s so that we are all on the same page.

we allowed to bring alcohol ritte?

I think as long as we don't attract attention and keep the booze out of site we should be ok.

Yea if i was still in bed at 6:30 in the morning i'm either sick or dead. 6:30 isn't really that early.

TJTJ
05-07-2009, 04:45 PM
I go to sleep before 6:30 AM on a good day.

:D

I hate waking up early though.

For the Barrens, its only ~ 45 minutes to an hour south from me....so its not too brutal.

For RC, its more like 2.5 hrs...which IS brutal.

9/10 times I end up leaving my house at mid-night after work, etc....and show up at the camp sites at like 3-4 in the morning, park, recline the seat, and sleep until the sun smacks me in the face.

:D

So - if you're more nocturnal, like I am...maybe just cruise in the night before, so you're there already in the AM.

:D

The only problems are I would need a ride TO the pines (I'm ~ 45-60 minutes north of them), and home again after...

...and when there, a spare seat.

Other than that, I'm almost completely house broken, and don't chew on the upholstery of the trucks much at all anymore.

So, if anyone wants the company...IF I CAN GET FREE, would you let me know if you're interested?

So what happened if you dont mind me asking?

I was doing a hospital evacuation project in May of 2008, and fell hard, tearing my rotator cuff, and herniating some disks in my neck...and since it was on the job, it was a workers comp case.

Well, lets just say they fought really hard to not fix the injury...until April of THIS YEAR, when they finally gave in, and allowed the surgery.

As the tissue was severely frayed/damaged, the Docs said there wasn't much to sew to....and the repairs were going to need a lot of time to set.

So, they said I couldn't drive for 3 months (Starting the first week of April), not because I couldn't drive one handed, but because the way the muscles cross braced, certain motions of the UN-injured side could tear the tiny stitches on the injured side.

So, I have ~ 2 months to go.

I was doing a hospital evacuation project in May of 2008, and fell hard, tearing my rotator cuff, and herniating some disks in my neck...and since it was on the job, it was a workers comp case.

Sorry to hear that. I don't get the workers comp. You have it and then when you need it they fight you. Why do they do that? If it happened on the job why is there such a problem.

Well, like all insurance companies, they want to receive checks for premiums, etc...but, they do NOT want to WRITE checks.

You see, the more checks they RECEIVE, the more money they have sitting in their coffers, earning interest and or dividends in their investments.

If their investment tanked, and each share is worth 1/2 what they paid for it...they do NOT want to sell it low, they want to wait for it to be worth more when they sell it.

If its in a cash position, earning interest, they want the interest to be on the LARGEST amount, for the LONGEST time possible.

So, WRITING a check means they bought high and sold low, or are losing the interest they would have earned on the money, and simply going to lose part of their principle.

Every day they delay a payment is another day of interest earned on that money.

So, that's why, as a tendency, insurance companies seem dick-like.

:)

Now, to add insult to injury in my case, the company I worked for lost majer clients due to the economy, and commenced big layoffs to cut overhead...I was spared as I brought in a lot of business...

...But, when the Ins said I'd be out of action for a while, the idea of carrying my 6 figure income w/o my 7 figure business infusion, scared them, and they laid me off too.

So, I was no longer someone the company would push the Ins Co to cut free for services...I was now someone the Ins could send endless requests for additional tests, PT, etc for, to stall.

As stalling is their favorite form of customer service, I was served accordingly.

:D

come on guys it won't be that bad, just don't try to go through a giant puddle in reverse like I did.

I’ve been there when it was very dry and we sunk a state forest fire truck in sugar sand and I was there when It was wet and I got my X swamped, but its all good fun. it’s a double edge sword. Maybe my winch will see some more action next weekend.

I just want it to be sunny while we are all down there, I don't care if everything else is wet.

A breeze is nice if we can get one, it makes the mosquitoes work harder to catch up.

:D

As for snorkels making all flooded bogs passable...its not the depth of the water, its the mud under it...and that you can't see the ruts/terrain features, because they are too deep to discern/obscured by the water on top of them, etc.

:D

People dump crap (Illegally) back there...so you can get up a nice head of steam, and be plowing through a fording without a care in the world, and slam into a submerged commercial air-conditioning unit, a chevy vega, or other submerged obstruction. (Actual examples..)

IE: A snorkel keeps your intake higher...but, not necessarily keeps you from getting stuck....and, some crossings ARE too deep for a snorkeled X when there's a lot of rain, etc....like over your roof.

I know this because I've seen rigs do the submariner routine, and disappear from view under the water like a sub diving to escape a dive bomber.

:D

I've seen rigs working their way across, and suddenly realize there's a drop off as their hood and half their windshield is suddenly awash, and they feel themselves slipping down the submerged grade, screaming for help...and they go under, all the way sometimes, unless we had the foresight to hook a winch line to their ass before they started across, to belay them.

http://xterrafirma.com/albums/TJs-X-Winch-Stuff/Pulling_Stones_from_water.jpg
He went down at about a 45º angle, screaming at the top of his lungs to winch him back...this shot was a little AFTER that, as he's getting back up onto the more level grade.

If he had NOT been already hooked up, he would have been completely under water, it was over 10' deep there...well over snorkel height.

As it was, on the one in the pic, his engine stalled immediately, saving him from hydrolocking damage, but, it took us about 4-5 hours to get him running again, and he ended up getting it towed home after we limped out of the swamp. When he open his door, water gushed out of the interior, he was completely flooded, as his driver's window was OPEN, and the truck filled up really fast, literally drowning out his screams for help.

LOL

The secret is to NOT do stupid stuff....the guy who flooded his X wanted to take a chance, the rest of us said NO FREEKIN WAAY!!!, there were 44" Bogger tracks going in, and none coming out the other side...a bad sign, plus, the texture on the water surface changed about where one would expect a drop off/deeper water, etc...

I finally convinced him that if he were going to go for it, to let me hook him to the winch, and let him free spool out...so if he got into trouble, I could haul him back to terra firma.

Hey, should I remove the stock plastic mudflaps? Do they gather mud or do they get caught and snap off or something?

They get broken, as they hang too low....so its better to remove them before hand...as when they break, they can also bend back the parts they're attached to, etc...causing more damage than just to themselves. (Takes about 5 minutes, just a few screws)

Also remove stock step rails (~20 minutes if rusted), and the vestigial plastic hub caps (5 seconds each)....and if you have not yet done so, remove the rear sway bar (~ 15 minutes if rusted)...it makes you get stuck a lot in the sand, etc...as your rear tires can't reach the ground on uneven terrain, etc.

Spray your alternator and wiring, fuses, etc...with silicone spray, to help bead off water and crud. (5 minutes)

Its the metal bar going across the axle and differential...it has a link at each end that goes up to the frame.

http://xterrafirma.com/albums/TJs-X-Winch-Stuff/under_cargo_area_from_bottom_l.jpg

All you need to do is:

1) Remove the two small clamps that hold the bar to the axle (On each clamp, there's two bolts, one bolt comes out, the other you only need to loosen, as the clamp is slotted there, and the clamp just slides off when loose).

2) Remove one bolt at the upper end of each link.

4) Its now unbolted, merely remove the entire assembly as one long gangly piece...and you are DONE.

I recommend putting the bolts back in to hold the spots closed/not losing them, etc. I slather some anti-seize on the threads, and just put them back where they came from.

(Same treatment for the step rail bolts, etc...)

MudFlaps:"Takes about 5 minutes, just a few screws"
Actually took me 15 minutes - I needed a shorty phillips from my neighbor, and took some time with the plastic "bolt" on the rears to try to not tear anything.

Stock step rails: "~20 minutes if rusted"
5 min each side - came off really easy. I was surprised at how light they are.

Vestigial plastic hub caps: "5 seconds each"
Left on since they seem really tight. If I lose one then I will remove them.

Rear sway bar:"~ 15 minutes if rusted"
10 minutes - I saw a thread that pointed out that the boot side at the top actually had the ability to receive a wrench. That helped.

All in all, a 2009 has little if any rust, so parts were not "knuckle buster" tight.

ow

Don't key the mike w/o SWR-ing the set-up, you can potentially fry your CB if the ratio is bad....and you need the SWR to see that.

yea I didnt screw around with it at all. just turned it on to see that is working

Im loading up the truck right now, I'm just going to throw this out there but does anyone want to buy a Center link, Idel arm, or pitman arm? If so I'll throw it into the truck. I just want to get rid of it but I'm not really willing to give it away, 20 for the CL, 15 for the IA, and 15 for the pitman. I know this is not the classified section but I'm just throwing it out there for the Pine barren Run Guys

For those of you who have completed your snorkels, and water proofing and Si-ing activities...start grinning....I read the weather forecast.

Apparently, the rain will commence today, and continue until end of Sunday...

....Rain, thunder, lightening, X's and mud, what's not to love.

:D

On the additional bowl of awesomeness plus side, we'll also have a very LOW risk of forest fire this weekend.

Sounds more mild actually.

:D

Looks like light/scattered rain, 1/4" or so for the day, both days.

So, we'll be wet, and a tent will be a PITA...so, sleeping in the truck will be more of a good option.

RainX-ing the glass might be a good idea if you've never done it....really beads off the crud so you can see out better. There's an anti-fog version for the inside that works well too....so when you wake up and all your wet clothes steamed up the X overnight, you'll be able to drive it again.

:D
