: tire pressure monitoring system

I have a 2005 XTerra that replaced my crashed 2000
Xterra. Love them both. However, the new on has the
federally regulated tire pressure monitor system that
screams at me every time the tire pressure goes below
35 psi. Not fun in the winter when the cold outside
temps lower the pressure and the daytime sun raises
pressure. I get scream at a lot by the computer
monitoring system. Also, I can not air down to go
off-road. I used to air down to around 25 psi in my
old XTerra and then fill up at the gas station on the
way home. My question is: can this system be disabled?
Im tired of losing tooth fillings on rocky roads and
getting screamed at. Any help with this would be
greatly appriciated. Thanks.

Hi! Welcome to Club X!

I'll leave the answering of your question to our omnipotent offroading advisor, TJ. :)

Welcome!!

The Tire Pressure Warning System isn't supposed to do anything until you get down to 28psi, so yours may be malfunctioning.

I don't know of any way to disable the system.

I believe the people who replaced the rims with non-sensor versions, or who simply removed the sensors, eliminated the signal that triggered the alarm.

It seems that no signal is the default, and that a low pressure signal is the trigger.

The wire bundle that carries the tire monitor signal, and the involved fuse, also powers the gauge cluster, so just pulling the fuse makes the cluster go dark in addition to disabling the tire monitor.

I don't have one of the new fangled models, but those who do, seem to have experienced the above rim/sensor options, and been happy with the result (No tire alarm, etc).

I can ask around to see if any other options have been discovered, for example, someone may have taken the time to trace the wire from the cluster bundle, and isolate the monitor signal to the dash alarm, etc...and spliced in a switch or a dead end, etc. to allow disabling of the tire alarm alone.

Hope that helps!

What I've found is that at 35psi and below it sends a one time warning scream (beep) and turns on the check tire light. Below 28 and it will scream (beep) every 12 minutes or something annoying. I have read that some systems with the sensors completely removed essentially have dissabled the system having no signal to monitor. I was hoping for some more technical info about the system without having to buy the $300 service manual. Thank you for the feedback.

The service manual actually doesn't offer much more insight than what you have found.

thanks for the replies. It sounds like removing the sensors is the safest way to disable the alarm. I don't want to pull any fuses because causes other things to not work when needed.

so anyone with a set of aftermarket wheels with no tpms sensors disables the alarm but what about the low tire presure light that comes on towards the far left of the gauge cluster, does that stay on??? please help rims and tires on that way!!!

The day I left the dealership with my 07 the TP light went on. They checked it and it had a faulty valve which they replaced.
Last Thanksgiving we were at our relatives home when the outside temp dropped to well below freezing. Well my TP light came on again on the ride home. The next morning after the car set all night in my garage and the tires were cool I checked and they all were around 32 psi. When they were outside below frreezing the pressure must have decreased to around 28 psi which triggered the sensor.
Anyway, while cold I pumped 36-37 pounds into each tire and the sensor went off after 1/4 mile and has remained off.
My friends Tahoe has individual tire sensor indicators which make it easy to tell which tire is acting up. I wish the Xterra had it so long as the sensors are apparently mandated.

yes, if you remove the sensors the warning light will remain on. Most just cover it up with a piece of black tape.
