I have a preowned 2004 X 6 cyl.

It has 68000 miles. Starts, runs great.

The distributor cap and rotor look clean and ok to me, but how do I know if I need a routine maintainence replacement?

Look underneath, and there should be six points. If they are black and dirty, then replace them. It is fine to replace, but not totally necessary:)

I like to start fresh if I get a used rig...that way, I know what's what....that includes repacking the wheel bearings, fresh lubs in the diffs, tranny, t-case, grease the zerks, etc.

zerk - grease fitting
http://img.alibaba.com/photo/100983944/Zerk_Fitting_grease_nipple.jpg

found on tie rod ends, bushings, bearings, sleeves, other things that move/rotate that need grease.....

many things on the X are not greasable, as nissan wants you to come in to the dealership to have the part REPLACED rather than SERVICED....usually replacement aftermarket chassis parts come with provisions for grease fittings

I thought there were none... ?

uh oh

:aufgeregt-big:

Um, that means your front propeller shaft for example would be running on, um whatever the factory put in there a while back?

uh-oh is right-o... when I took it to the shop (for an oil change) they told me there were none. There not trying to mess with me, I mean while they work on it I'll stand right next to them and look on or help out a little... must be they over looked it or that maybe they didn't see it. I'll have to mention it the next time I go in... along with running some seafoam through.

Got clarification from another thread here.

Only our propeller shaft has the grease fitting(which you may want to replace with a zerk since its better). I really wish someone would make a how to on where to drill and install the other zerk fittings for us noobs.

It's my fault, someone mentioned propeller shaft and a grease fitting and I chimed in.
