: Why wont my Xterra run?

I have a 2003 6cyl Xterra. For some reason when I start it, it goes up to idle speed, then goes "lub.....lub.....lub.....lub" at VERY LOW idle then dies.

So I opened air filer box and let it suck air directly instead of through the filter and when I do that it runs ok but still idles funny. I bought a new air filter a few months ago and it has been running fine so it can't be the filter. But when I put just one finger over the air intake screen it dies instantly.

For some reason my X isn't getting enough air.

I just filled up with fuel like 15 miles ago and its a station I haven't filled up at before. Do you think it could be the gas? Its the same kind I use everytime; super unleaded with 10% ethanol.

PLEASE help me! This is sooo frustrating.

Could be your FSU (fuel sending unit) have you had the recall done?

No, I haven't done the recall. Does it include 2003 models?

Unplug your MAF, that is what the problem is. Turn your engine on, unplug your MAF sensor, turn off your engine, plug it back in, start your engine again.

if you havent done the recall yet go ahead and cal the dealer to see if your vin is included so they can get it out of the way... and to the OP i agree with james it is the MAF...

Hey guys. Well I got it all figured out. Turns out it had nothing to do with the FSU, it was actually a tube next to the air box (vaccum?) that had come disconnected. So my X wasn't sucking air. Its all better now. Thanks a lot though for the help.
